This site’s traffic declined sharply in May; likely because referral spam suddenly went out of style.

our little medium is all grown up

Got a junk call (from 214-279-0990) just now on my mobile telephone. I think it’s my first ever in seven years.

In unrelated news, the humidity that was just barely unpleasant earlier today is now coming down as a very fine drizzle, a pleasant change, and very unusual for June. Mom tells me California has been getting rain that normally goes to Cascadia.

where have all the spammers gone?

This week I saw a sudden decline in two kinds of spam: comment spam on this here blog, and referral spam in my HTTP log. I have not done anything recently to improve filtering.

it ain’t me, babe!

Some clown is using my address to spam everyone@amherst.edu with what appears to be an account of the bombing of Dresden. Why??

temptation

A spam this morning from someone who wants to “invest” in my website and improve its search-rank; apparently he believes I’m selling something. I’m way tempted to call the 877 number and string them along, seeing how long it takes them to figure out that my only website is personal.

And then I think, could that itself be an advertising tactic?

  1. Send a pitch clearly inapplicable to most recipients, tempting me to telephone and waste your time;
  2. Wait for me to call, and then once I’m on the line,
  3. ???
  4. Profit!!
