I resent Halloween: it’s so close to my birthday that I long ago gave up trying to compete with all the parties going on then.
I don’t announce my exact birthdate; that way I tell myself I’ll be less disappointed when no one remembers it. It doesn’t work, really. I’m not fond of cake; I’m tempted to throw things if someone threatens to sing at me – but I do wish someone other than immediate family would give me a drink and a kiss. It’s worse than average this year because I’m between jobs and therefore there’s little to distract me from my solitude.
That said, my stepsiblings have invited me to get drunk this evening (which is not necessarily the nominal date of this post), and I think I’ll take them up on it.

An unexpected effect of listening to music through my computer’s speakers is a better stereo image than I’m used to. That’s how I noticed for the first time that Loituma’s joyously goofy song Ievan polkka has four vocal parts, not three: the female lead and the male accompaniment are in the center, with two female voices, singing almost but not quite the same part, in the wings. (Maybe it’s one woman singing the same part twice but adlibbing.)
If any of you understand Finnish, by the way, I’d love to have a transcription and a translation.
a year passes like nothing
It’s a year since I moved this humble effort from Blogger to WordPress, plenty of time for some of you to update your links — not that I’m not grateful for attention in whatever form.
A tip of the hat to those few who have already done so.
