why walk when you can stagger?

I got AT&T DSL because it’s a third the price of Comcast. Suddenly things go wrong: I can’t write here, or back up this site; I can’t save my edits to a Wikipedia article; and an article at the New York Times never loads. (I’m writing this on Comcast.)

Thanks for the warning; Ron and I have ben considering DSL from our (non-AT&T) phone company.

It’s been way fun deciphering their offer and comparing it to what we have. In the course of this we’ve learned that my access is 3-5 times faster than Ron’s; the corporate VPN he connects to for work slows him down.

The problems went away when I took the router (which allows four computers to share the modem) out of the chain; but with two and sometimes three users in the house, that’s not satisfactory.

The permanent solution was to change a setting in the modem, so that PPP is initiated by the router.

Hm. Still having trouble with Wikipedia.

FYI, AT&T does very intrusive network inspection of things like http requests, which it transparently proxies and sometimes censors and such. I would never use them.

Maybe someday I too will be able again to afford higher standards. Maybe too in NYC you have more choices?
