{"id":4484,"date":"2023-03-02T15:23:45","date_gmt":"2023-03-02T23:23:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bendwavy.org\/wp\/?p=4484"},"modified":"2023-04-01T07:56:38","modified_gmt":"2023-04-01T15:56:38","slug":"rdcb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bendwavy.org\/wp\/?p=4484","title":{"rendered":"RDCB"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A generation ago, it was reported that Readers Digest Condensed Books planned an edition of The Bible, provoking obvious jokes that it would cut three Commandments and four Apostles.<\/p>\n<p>Now that I&#8217;m reading the thing, though, I do see where it could be shortened with little risk of offense.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Genesis and Exodus contain several repeated genealogies.<\/li>\n<li>Exodus 36\u201339 could be summarized: \u201cThe tabernacle and its furnishings were made according to the detailed plans dictated to Moses by The LORD in chapters 25\u201327.\u201d (I mostly skimmed over these chapters.)<\/li>\n<li>Leviticus 1\u20137, prescribing rituals of sacrifice for all occasions, could be put more concisely in table format, as could various parts of Numbers.<\/li>\n<li>Leviticus 13\u201314, concerning skin infections, may be obsolete.<\/li>\n<li>Leviticus 18:6\u201318 details varieties of incest, all equally forbidden, and could be collapsed with \u201cor\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Joshua 13\u201321 mostly details the boundaries of the lands allotted to each of the tribes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I will likely add to this later.<\/p>\n<p>In some places the repetition makes me think the tale was relayed orally for some generations before being written.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A generation ago, it was reported that Readers Digest Condensed Books planned an edition of The Bible, provoking obvious jokes that it would cut three Commandments and four Apostles.
