{"id":3309,"date":"2014-02-24T21:47:48","date_gmt":"2014-02-25T05:47:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bendwavy.org\/wp\/?p=3309"},"modified":"2014-02-27T17:21:06","modified_gmt":"2014-02-28T01:21:06","slug":"models-of-the-35-smallest-fullerenes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bendwavy.org\/wp\/?p=3309","title":{"rendered":"models of the 35 smallest fullerenes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I noticed that Shapeways had 13 models of the roundest of the fullerenes (one of the 1812 forms of C60), but none of the less regular forms; so I made some.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/doodle\/sevenbyfive.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Each of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/model\/1648704\/19-small-achiral-fullerenes.html\">white pieces<\/a> has mirror symmetry; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/model\/1648774\/16-small-chiral-fullerenes-red.html\">red pieces<\/a> are <acronym title=\"'handed': not its own mirror image\">chiral<\/acronym>.  Not shown (because it hasn&#8217;t been printed yet): the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/model\/1648780\/16-small-chiral-fullerenes-blue.html\">blue set<\/a>, which is a reflection of the red set.  The idea is that you buy both red and blue if and only if you count reflected chiral forms separately.<\/p>\n<p>These figures have 12 pentagons and up to 8 hexagons.
