{"id":2637,"date":"2010-10-15T16:42:40","date_gmt":"2010-10-16T00:42:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ogre.nu\/wp\/?p=2637"},"modified":"2018-02-24T16:18:11","modified_gmt":"2018-02-25T00:18:11","slug":"toward-a-graceful-imitation-of-the-crude","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bendwavy.org\/wp\/?p=2637","title":{"rendered":"toward a graceful imitation of the crude"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve long had an idea to design &#8220;outline&#8221; typefaces which, at appropriate low resolution, would mimic certain bitmap fonts that have <a href=\"http:\/\/cyber1.org\/\">sentimental resonance<\/a>.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/doodle\/s-1g2.png\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/doodle\/s-2g2.png\"><br \/>\nThe orange discs are the original dots, of course.  The blue arcs are least-squares fits (linear, quadratic) to subranges of the dots.  The arcs are blended with a weighting function that favors longer arcs, as well as the middle of each arc.  Finally, the stroke is thickened by adding &plusmn;<i>i<\/i>\/2 to the parametric variable.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first version in which the stroke-ends are neither brutally stiff nor (in some cases) grotesquely exuberant.  I don&#8217;t know yet whether the lumpiness, here and there, reflects <s>a flaw<\/s> an opportunity to improve the blending function or a limitation of the cubic splines used to simplify the final curve.<\/p>\n<p>(I previously made <a href=\"\/Angeles-Blunt.suit.zip\">a TrueType version of Apple&#8217;s &#8220;Los Angeles&#8221; font<\/a>, by a much more <i>ad hoc<\/i> approach.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve long had an idea to design &#8220;outline&#8221; typefaces which, at appropriate low resolution, would mimic certain bitmap fonts that have sentimental resonance.
