I wrote a sentence containing <\/p>\n<blockquote><p> .&nbsp;.&nbsp;. which led to reconstructing in my mind .&nbsp;.&nbsp;. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> because <\/p>\n<blockquote><p> .&nbsp;.&nbsp;. which led to mentally reconstructing .&nbsp;.&nbsp;. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> seemed wrong: <a href=\"http:\/\/alt-usage-english.org\/excerpts\/fxspliti.html\">everyone knows<\/a> you don&#8217;t put an adverb between <i>to<\/i> and a verb form!  (You&#8217;ll note that <i>to reconstructing<\/i> is not an infinitive, so the &#8216;rule&#8217; does not apply.)<\/p>\n<p>When I became consciously aware of that confused subconscious reasoning, I changed it to the latter.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder how many now-standard grammatical features we owe to such extensions of misunderstanding.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A little incident in folk grammar, funny to me at least.
