Plot-free.<\/p>\n<p><i>Plein Soleil (Purple Noon)<\/i> (dir. <a href=\".\/?p=662\">Ren&eacute; Cl&eacute;ment<\/a>), the first film version of <i>The Talented Mr Ripley<\/i>, quite good.  The French title means <i>broad daylight<\/i>; I saw nothing that would explain <i>purple<\/i>!<\/p>\n<p><i>&Agrave; bout de souffle (Breathless)<\/i> (dir. Jean-Luc Godard).  One more Famous Groundbreaking Work of Art checked off.<\/p>\n<p><i>The Apartment<\/i> (dir. Billy Wilder).  Good fun.<\/p>\n<p><i>The Little Shop of Horrors<\/i> (dir. Roger Corman).  The amateurishness of it all is both amusing and frustrating. &#8212; In the first scene we hear Seymour offstage singing &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Bohemian_Girl\">Marble Halls<\/a>&#8220;, a song previously known to me only from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.enya.com\/\">Enya<\/a>&#8216;s third album <i>Shepherd Moons<\/i> (1991).<\/p>\n<p>\u03a0\u03bf\u03c4\u03ad \u03a4\u03b7\u03bd \u039a\u03c5\u03c1\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03ae <i>Never on Sunday<\/i> (dir. Jules Dassin).  Abandoned out of boredom after a few minutes.  Remind me not to rent any more foreign movies about whores &#8212; or of which I know nothing but the theme tune.<\/p>\n<p><i>The Magnificent Seven<\/i> (dir. John Sturges).  Contains a line that had stuck in my mind for years, and sometimes bugged me that I could not recall its source: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p> It&#8217;s like this fellow I knew in El Paso. One day, he just took all his clothes off and jumped in a mess of cactus. I asked him that same question: why? &#8212; He said it seemed to be a good idea at the time. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><i>Tirez sur le pianiste (Shoot the Piano Player)<\/i> (dir. Fran&ccedil;ois Truffaut).<\/p>\n<p><i>Tunes of Glory<\/i> (dir. Ronald Neame).<\/p>\n<p><i>The Entertainer<\/i> (dir. Tony Richardson).  Lawrence Olivier is splendid as a vaudevillian who cannot accept that he&#8217;s washed up.  Alan Bates&#8217;s first movie; for twenty minutes I didn&#8217;t spot him, until some distinctive gesture.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>La Dolce Vita (dir. Federico Fellini).
